We continue the countdown to JAZZ RE:FEST 2015 with a profile on two insanely talented bands – the inspirational all-female ensemble NERIJA and the incredible PETER EDWARDS TRIO…
(In their own words)
Nérija (pronounced ‘Ne-ree-ya’) began from a Tomorrow’s Warriors initiative seeking to encourage young women to play jazz. Now we are a collective of accomplished musicians playing our unique and original compositions/arrangements.
Our unique line-up consisting of 4 horns and guitar is what contributes to our distinctive, fresh and current sound. With influences from Jazz, Hip-hop, Afro Beat and Township music, our music is a contributor to London’s live music scene.
Consisting of Sheila Maurice-Grey on trumpet, Rosie Turton on trombone, Cassie Kinoshi on alto sax, Nubya Garcia on tenor sax, Shirley Tetteh on guitar, Inga Eichler on double bass and Lizy Exell on drums, Nérija have toured across Europe in such places as Norway and Germany, and have played alongside top UK jazz musicians such as Nathaniel Facey of Empirical and Zoe Rahman. This year Nérija will be playing at Latitude and Brainchild Festival and are putting together some exciting shows for the rest of the year.
